How much does a website cost in Pretoria? Compare the whole commitment

In this article
A website quote can be low because the scope is small, because you supply the content or because costs move into a monthly commitment. None is automatically wrong. The useful question is what you will pay for the website you actually need—and what remains your responsibility.
Why there is no single Pretoria website price
A simple service site, a shop and a custom portal are different products. Page count matters, but so do content preparation, design depth, integrations, migration, accessibility testing and support. A local address does not make those requirements identical.
Published starting prices can help you discover options, but they do not establish a market average or a binding quote. Ask for a written scope. This guide deliberately does not repeat an old Luminum promotional price as a current offer.

Separate the five cost groups
The build may include design and development but exclude copywriting and photography. Running costs can include domain renewal, hosting, email and software licences. Maintenance may cover updates and recovery while excluding content changes. Marketing is usually a separate activity. Migration or integration work can add project-specific costs.
Ask whether charges are once-off, monthly or annual, and whether tax is included. Check minimum terms and what you retain when the contract ends. A rental-style arrangement and an owned deliverable should not be compared as if they were the same commitment.
A worked first-year comparison
Here is a hypothetical budgeting exercise, not a provider quote or a claim about typical Pretoria prices. Option A has a R6,000 build, R350 monthly running costs and R2,000 of content work: R12,200 over twelve months. Option B has a R10,000 build including the specified content and R200 monthly running costs: R12,400. Tax and any additional work are excluded from this example.
The R4,000 difference in the initial build shrinks to R200 over the first year. That does not make either option better. You still need to compare deliverables, support, ownership and suitability.
For your own calculation, use: setup + one-off extras + twelve months of recurring costs + annual renewals due in the period. Do not count a renewal twice if it is already included in a monthly package.
| Compare | Option A | Option B |
|---|---|---|
| Build | R6,000 | R10,000 |
| Content | R2,000 | Included in specified build |
| Recurring cost over 12 months | R4,200 | R2,400 |
| Total before tax and other extras | R12,200 | R12,400 |

Spend on the constraint, not on every feature
If customers cannot understand the service, content work may matter more than animation. If staff cannot manage enquiries, fix the handoff. If the existing site has one broken function, ask whether a repair is more sensible than replacement.
A template-based build can be appropriate for straightforward needs. Custom development can be justified by real workflow or integration requirements. Neither approach automatically guarantees better search rankings or conversion.

Ask these questions before accepting
Who supplies the text and images? How many revision rounds are included? Who owns the domain and project files? What happens if an integration changes? What support is included after launch? What does cancellation or migration cost?
Request a second explanation if any answer is unclear. A useful quotation should make the tradeoffs easier to understand, not require you to become a developer before you can compare it.
